Maria Pizzi was born in Soriano nel Cimino in 1954. With a degree in Architecture, Mary is a video artist and is considered to be the leading figure of the Roman “trans avant-garde”. She was awarded the ABO in 2006. She creates animation videos in black and white made using handicraft techniques, freeze frames, processed photos printed on paper or cloth and video stills of aluminium. Though reluctant to display her work in public, preferring a more intimate dimension, when she does exhibit her work, she aims to make the spectators take an active approach, using tricks in their organisation and participative and alienating performances. She also adopts an alternative approach in her identifying of issues, often in the form of black stamps, veiled in tragic irony and subtle allusions to newspaper.
